A Very Good Wife

By Jim MacDonald

My Good Wife

He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord. Proverbs 18:22

Wives played a significant role in the Bible and consequently in the lives of people in general. The Bible addresses every aspect of a wife. From the physical, emotional, and spiritual side to her overall role. It covers her duties around the house to her working in the public square. It also covers the sexual relationship with her husband as well as her role as a mother. And of course, the Bible certainly covers the negative side which we won’t discuss here.

Husbands, when thinking about your wife, are you aware of what God says: “He who finds a wife finds what is good”? Too often, I must answer no. Things she does which are “good” I tend to take for granted. Things that don’t meet my expectation are dwelled upon at least in my head—because, let’s face it, I never do anything wrong (kidding, of course).

The Wife completes God’s creation

Genesis 2:18: “The Lord God said, it is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

According to Genesis chapter 1, God created the entire world over a 6-day period and rested on the seventh. After each day’s work, God said, “it was good”. When He finished creating man and gave him a helpmate, a woman on the sixth day, God looks over the earth, plants, animals and the two humans and He was pleased. Genesis 1:31 says: “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good…”.

Imperfect people serving a perfect God

We are all humans and certainly not perfect. My pastor always says: “our church is filled with imperfect people serving a perfect God”. So why would we expect our wives to be running close to perfect? Us men, certainly are not. It’s clear when God says: “He who finds a wife finds what is good” and then says, “and receives favor from the Lord.” We all could use more ‘favor from the Lord’. So let’s stop taking our wives for granted and realize, she’s ‘what is good’ and then, we can look for favor from God.

What else does God say about wives: Proverbs 5:18 says, “May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.” Proverbs 12:4 says, “A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown…”. Proverbs 19:14 says this “…but a prudent wife is from the Lord”. The last verse I’ll quote from Proverbs is 31:10 “A wife of noble character who can find?”. Read all of Proverbs, chapter 31 because it describes who a woman of noble character is, and she certainly is an amazing woman. God reminds us that our wives are from Him. I certainly don’t want to take anything God has given me for granted.

In verses from other chapters, we find Psalm 128:3 “Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; Ephesians 5:28 says: “In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.” There are many more verses that speak about us men loving our wives, but I’ll end with this one. Jesus said, in Mark 10: 7-8 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” Since God’s design is to be of ‘one flesh’ it’s important we don’t separate what God has joined.

Conclusion

None of us, husbands or wives are perfect—but we do serve a perfect God. Let’s reach out to God in prayer and ask Him to open our eyes to see “what is good” in each other. I know my wife deserves it and I’m sure yours does as well.
